Major Benefits of Star Health Assure

1. Hospitalisation Coverage

Eligible medical expenses for inpatient hospitalisation of more than 24 hours due to illness, injury or accident are covered according to the Sum Insured and policy conditions.

The policy can cover expenses such as room, nursing, ICU, medicines, diagnostics, surgery and other admissible hospitalization expenses.

2. Pre & Post-Hospitalisation Expenses

The policy provides:

  • Pre-hospitalisation: up to 60 days before admission
  • Post-hospitalisation: up to 180 days after discharge

These expenses remain subject to the conditions of the policy.

3. Unlimited Automatic Restoration

One of the major features is automatic restoration of the Sum Insured.

If the Sum Insured is partly or fully utilised, 100% of the Sum Insured can be restored an unlimited number of times during the policy year, subject to policy terms.

For example, if the Sum Insured is ₹10 lakh and an admissible claim uses ₹8 lakh, the policy can restore the Sum Insured according to the applicable restoration conditions.

Important: Restoration does not mean that every medical expense is automatically payable. Waiting periods, exclusions, sub-limits and claim conditions continue to apply.

4. Maternity Benefit

Star Health Assure provides coverage for eligible delivery expenses, including normal delivery and Caesarean section, up to 10% of the Sum Insured, subject to policy terms and waiting period.

Example

If the Sum Insured is ₹20 lakh:

10% × ₹20 lakh = ₹2 lakh

This does not mean every customer will automatically receive ₹2 lakh. Eligibility, waiting period and other policy conditions apply.

The policy wording states a 24-month waiting period for the first delivery from the first inception of the policy.

5. Newborn Baby Coverage

Eligible hospitalization expenses for the newborn can be covered from the day of birth until the expiry of the policy, subject to applicable limits and conditions.

This should not be confused with maternity coverage—the two are separate benefits with their own conditions.

6. Assisted Reproduction Treatment (ART)

Star Health Assure provides a benefit for proven Assisted Reproduction Treatment, subject to specified limits and conditions.

The policy wording contains specified ART limits depending on the Sum Insured. For example, the published benefit table shows ART limits ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹4 lakh for different Sum Insured options.

Therefore, customers should not assume that the complete cost of IVF/ICSI/IUI is automatically covered.

Always check the applicable ART limit and policy conditions before treatment.

7. Home Care Treatment

Specified home-care treatment can be covered up to:

10% of Sum Insured, subject to a maximum of ₹5 lakh per policy year, as per the applicable conditions.

8. Chronic Severe Refractory Asthma

The plan provides coverage for eligible treatment of Chronic Severe Refractory Asthma, including inpatient, daycare, home-care and outpatient expenses, up to 10% of Sum Insured subject to a maximum of ₹5 lakh per policy period.

9. Day Care Treatments

Many medical procedures that require hospitalisation for less than 24 hours can qualify as day-care treatments, subject to the policy's covered procedure list and conditions.

10. AYUSH Treatment

Eligible inpatient treatment under:

  • Ayurveda
  • Unani
  • Siddha
  • Homoeopathy

can be covered according to the policy terms.

11. Ambulance Benefits

The policy provides road ambulance coverage subject to the applicable conditions.

Air ambulance expenses are covered up to 10% of Sum Insured per policy year, where the policy conditions for emergency hospitalization and transportation are satisfied.

12. Cumulative Bonus

For every claim-free year, the Sum Insured can receive a 25% cumulative bonus, subject to a maximum of 100% of the Sum Insured, according to the published plan details.

13. Wellness Programme

The Star Wellness Programme can provide a renewal premium discount of up to 20%, depending on wellness activities and applicable eligibility conditions.

14. Teleconsultation

The plan provides unlimited teleconsultation through Star Health's mobile application/digital platforms, subject to the applicable service terms.

Teleconsultation can be useful for routine medical guidance, follow-ups and certain non-emergency consultations.

Specific Diseases & Procedures: 24-Month Waiting Period

One of the most important points customers should understand is the Specific Diseases/Procedures waiting period of 24 months.

Examples of conditions/procedures appearing under the specified waiting-period provisions include conditions relating to:

  • Cataract and certain eye conditions
  • ENT-related conditions
  • Thyroid conditions
  • Benign breast diseases
  • Certain benign lumps/cysts
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Trigger Finger
  • Certain tendon, ligament, fascia, bone and joint conditions
  • Arthroscopy and certain joint replacement-related treatment
  • Degenerative spine/disc conditions
  • Slipped/prolapsed disc
  • Gallbladder and pancreatic stones/conditions
  • Kidney and genitourinary stones
  • Hernia
  • Certain diseases of the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries
  • Prostate-related diseases
  • Hydrocele, varicocele and spermatocele
  • Piles, fissure, fistula and hemorrhoids
  • Pilonidal sinus
  • Varicose veins and varicose ulcers
  • Transplant-related treatment

The exact applicability depends on the policy wording, medical condition and circumstances of the claim.

Accident-related situations can have different treatment under the waiting-period provisions.

Waiting Periods You Must Know

1. Initial Waiting Period – 30 Days

Generally, illnesses occurring during the first 30 days are subject to the initial waiting period.

Accident claims are an exception, subject to policy terms.

2. Specific Diseases/Procedures – 24 Months

Certain listed diseases and procedures have a 24-month waiting period.

3. Pre-Existing Diseases

For a 1-year or 2-year policy term: 36 months.

For a 3-year policy term: 30 months.

The applicable waiting period and underwriting conditions should be checked in the policy schedule and wording.

10% Co-Payment After Age 61

This is an important limitation.

According to the current product information, if the insured person purchases or renews the policy at 61 years of age or above, a 10% co-payment applies to every claim.

Simple Example

Suppose the admissible claim amount is ₹5 lakh.

10% co-payment = ₹50,000

Insurance company's payable portion = ₹4,50,000

The exact claim calculation can vary depending on other policy limits and deductions.

Room Rent Limits

Room entitlement depends on the Sum Insured:

  • ₹5 lakh / ₹7.5 lakh: room, boarding and nursing expenses up to 1% of Sum Insured per day.
  • ₹10 lakh to ₹25 lakh: any room except suite or above category.
  • ₹50 lakh to ₹2 crore: any room, subject to policy terms.

Room entitlement is important because choosing a room beyond the permitted category can affect claim calculations.

Important Exclusions & Limitations

Star Health Assure is comprehensive, but it does not mean every disease, treatment or medical expense is automatically covered.

Important exclusions/limitations can include:

  • Waiting periods
  • Pre-existing disease conditions
  • Specific disease/procedure waiting period
  • Room-rent restrictions for applicable Sum Insured options
  • Policy-specific sub-limits
  • Cosmetic/plastic surgery except where covered under applicable conditions
  • Obesity/weight-control treatment
  • Vaccination/inoculation, subject to policy exceptions
  • Alcohol/drug addiction treatment
  • Intentional self-injury
  • Certain congenital external defects
  • Unproven treatments
  • Certain dietary supplements/substances
  • Hazardous/adventure sports-related injuries, subject to the policy wording

The complete exclusions must always be read from the latest policy document.

Who Should Carefully Check This Policy Before Buying?

Customers should pay particular attention if they:

  • Already have a pre-existing disease
  • Are planning pregnancy
  • Are considering IVF/ART treatment
  • Are above 60 years of age
  • Have a history of cataract, hernia, kidney stone, gallbladder disease or joint problems
  • Expect frequent OPD treatment
  • Want a particular room category in a hospital
  • Are comparing different health insurance policies

The correct policy depends on the customer's age, medical history, family structure, Sum Insured requirement and budget.

It combines hospitalisation cover with features such as automatic restoration, maternity and newborn benefits, ART, home-care treatment, chronic severe refractory asthma coverage, wellness benefits, teleconsultation and cumulative bonus.

However, the most important part of health insurance is not only knowing what is covered—it is knowing when and under what conditions it is covered.
